 Kokedama

Kokedama (Japanese for "moss ball") is a style of potting up plants in a ball of moss and displaying them in a dish or suspended in the air. The style comes from a centuries-old tradition of exhibiting the exposed root ball of a bonsai specimen on a plate to highlight its elegant root system. As time passed, moss would accumulate on the roots, enhancing the display.

Today, November 10, 2022, Pine Ridge Garden Club learned how to do a Kokedama using a plastic bag, cactus soil amended with perlite and moss!!  Of course you can choose your style of decor to help  hold the moss on the ball.  String, heavy twine or even various colors of ribbon.

After the Presentor performed a show and tell each member was given the opportunity to make their own!

This is how the basic items looked:

The results.  Note the various schemes to hold the Moss on the Ball.  For Plant Material the Presentor recommended "Cactus plants or any plant that does not need much water.  Succulents also work well! A Hot Glue Gun can also be used to hold the moss and ball decor in place!

Use a knife to poke holes or holes into the bottom the ball so water can drain.  Add water at the top where the plant was placed on the ball.  Place the ball on a plate so You can enjoy your work.  These "Balls" are usually displayed indoors or in a protected area outside.  Like any arrangement with live Plant Material "Kokedama Arrangements are not intended as decor for a long period of time.  An informative, fun Meeting!
